MODULUS VIDEO HIGH DEFINITION AVC ENCODING SYSTEM WINS
PRESTIGIOUS BROADCAST ENGINEERING PICK HIT AWARD AT NAB 2004

Sunnyvale, California – April 28, 2004. Modulus Video, Inc., a provider of broadcast quality AVC (H.264 / MPEG-4.10) video compression systems for high definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) television, announced that it has been awarded the prestigious Broadcast Engineering Pick Hit Award for NAB 2004. The Modulus AVE-HD demonstrated for the first time at NAB last week in Las Vegas is the first real-time, high definition encoder that supports the new AVC standard, the widely-recognized replacement for the MPEG-2 broadcast video compression standard.

The Broadcast Engineering Pick Hit awards are the broadcast industry’s longest-running and most-respected new product technology honors, having been awarded for 20 years. The judges are readers of Broadcast Engineering magazine and working professionals in the broadcast, postproduction, network and satellite industries. To protect the integrity of awards, the judges remain anonymous throughout the evaluation process. Broadcast Engineering’s editors and publishers do not select the products and technology.

“We are delighted and gratified that industry leaders have recognized our team’s accomplishments and the inherent value of standards-based AVC,” commented Bob Wilson, Chairman and CEO of Modulus Video. “Our SD and HD broadcast solutions came to life last week at NAB. By teaming with sophisticated partners including LSI Logic Corporation (LSI) and AMD Corporation (AMD), Modulus Video has rapidly achieved a leadership position in the development and deployment of AVC solutions that meet the rigorous demands of broadcasters. The main criteria for this award are that the product improves day-to-day workflow and offers substantial improvement over previous technology. The highly-regarded Broadcast Engineering Pick Hit award validates that Modulus Video AVC products are emerging as the best of class solutions for broadcasters who want to substantially improve how video is distributed.”

The Modulus AVE-HD is being developed for early adopters, trials, and AVC technology evaluation for broadcast, postproduction, Telco and satellite applications. The AVE-HD will also provide an excellent platform for decoder qualification and verification.

At NAB, Modulus Video also demonstrated easily-deployable, open platform SD and HD decoding systems based on the AVC standard. Modulus Video has licensed pioneering AVC video compression/decompression technology from LSI. The HD decoding demonstration used the Modulus Video High Definition AVC decoder, the AVD-HD, running on a state-of-the-art AMD Opteron™ processor-based platform.

AVC Expected To Be the New Standard for Digital Video
Current digital video distribution is based primarily on MPEG-2, a nearly ten year old standard that has reached its limit of video compression efficiency. AVC (also known as H.264 / MPEG-4.10), a new and open video compression standard, was ratified in 2003 by the ITU and the MPEG. AVC has been shown to outperform MPEG-2 by at least a factor of two, thus requiring 50% or less bandwidth or storage capacity for equivalent quality. AVC replaces MPEG-2 as a compression standard while taking advantage of the ubiquitous presence and massive investment in MPEG-2 broadcast infrastructure by preserving it as the transport protocol. As a result of these benefits, AVC is expected to become the dominant standard worldwide for broadcast-quality video compression across all media and formats. AVC benefits accrue to existing broadcasters and new entrants for HD and SD applications.

About Modulus Video, Inc.
